Safe Client Transfer Techniques
Bed to Chair Transfers
Assess client strength before beginning. Position wheelchair at 45° angle to bed, lock wheels. Use transfer belts when needed, maintaining proper body mechanics with bent knees and straight back.
Chair to Toilet Transfers
Position wheelchair parallel to toilet. Ensure stability before beginning. Communicate each step clearly to client. Remove wheelchair armrest on transfer side for easier movement.
Car Transfers
Position wheelchair close to vehicle seat. Secure client with transfer belt if needed. Pivot client toward seat while supporting their weight. Protect client's head when entering vehicle.
